Finger Food for Babies – Mushroom Lentil Patties

Recipes for baby finger food does not have to be bland or boring. In fact, I would have a difficult time serving something to my children if I didn’t find it palatable myself.

Not only are finger food an important step for baby to practice motor skills, but also to introduce their palate to the different flavors, aromas and textures that a variety of good has to offer.

The following recipe for mushroom lentil patties are a fun and flavorful way to serve healthy finger food to your baby. Rich in vitamins, minerals and protein, your baby will enjoy picking up the pieces and exploring the texture of these nutritious mushroom lentil patties with their own little fingers.

As adults, we enjoy eating these patties whole, on a bun and garnished with lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard and sliced dill pickle. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 1 can brown lentils, rinsed, drained and mashed
  • 1 T canola oil
  • 1/2 C finely diced mushrooms
  • 1 stalk celery, finely diced
  • 2 sprigs of fresh thyme, leaves removed and chopped
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 C rolled oats
  • 1/4 C freshly grated parmesan cheese

Method

  1. In a non-stick skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat.
  2. Add mushrooms, celery and thyme and cook until mushrooms are soft and wilted and celery is soft, about 6 minutes
  3. Remove from heat and cool.
  4. Mash drained lentils in a large bowl.
  5. Add cooked mushrooms and celery, beaten egg, oats and parmesan cheese and mix with hands to form a large ‘ball’.
  6. Form hamburger patty sized disks out of the mushroom lentil patty mixture and place on a plate.
  7. Once all paddies are formed, heat a small amount of canola oil in a large frying pan or skillet over medium high heat. Cook mushroom lentil paddies for about 8 minutes on each side, until a slight crust forms on the patty. Turn patty over and cook on the other side.
  8. Cool slightly and cut up into bite-sized pieces
  9. Serve this finger food to baby with some cut up boiled or baked potato
  10. For adults, these delicious vegetarian patties can be served on a bun and garnished like a hamburger.
